Chess Club
Emma
The chess club is still on the move. All you have to do is come into Mr. Holmes class after school every Thursday. The kids mostly play chess on the computers. There is a tournament, and I hear there is a prize for the winner. The most important part about this is that Mr.Holmes can tell your teacher to give you extra credit in math. Which means good report cards when you get home!!!! And there just starting in the blue lab on compition.
Black History Month
Maddie
This month is black history month. As we all know, our very own president, Barack Obama, is the first African American to be president. Black history month is for us to celebrate the history of black Americans who changed America. Some are Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Malcom X, Harriet Tubman, and many more. It is important for us to learn about these many Americans who are heroes to our country.
Shoveling
Korissa
Mr. Holmes’ fifth grade class went shoveling on February 16. That's right, they grabbed their shovels and headed to the public library and the church across the street.. There wasn’t much snow, but still a nice thing to do. They were shoveling for about 15 to 30 minutes and the people across the street were really grateful. Mr. Holmes’ wants it to snow more so they can shovel more often!

Knowledge Bowl
Miranda
The 6th graders at the Roosevelt School are preparing for the Spring Knowledge Bowl Season. They have been working hard and practicing everyday during lunch. The 6th graders use the classroom Smartboard to answer questions to test their knowledge. They all take turns pushing buttons and answering questions. They have already competed in the Knowledge Bowl Regular Season and the Knowledge Masters. The 6th graders came in second to last in the Knowledge Masters Tournament. That was pretty good for their first time competing. The Knowledge Bowl participants are getting better and soon they will be ready to win the tournament.

Sports Stories
Skiing
Mika
There is a cross-country ski club for Virginia elementary students, as well as students from around the area. They meet Sunday afternoons at Giants Ridge. One skiier told us that they learn to go up and down hills, stop and start. They even get to race each other! They also play games like Frisbee, soccer, and Sharks and Minnows. And of course, they get a snack when they are done!
Basketball
Ana
Girls and boys basketball has been a big hit at Roosevelt Elementary! Basketball has been going on for quite some time and it has been a great success!

The fourth grade girls beat Mountain Iron on Friday, 16-10.

The fifth grade girls took second place at their tournament in Nashwauk-Keewatin last weekend. They defeated Bigfork Little Falls, Deer River, and Nashwauk Keewatin before losing to Grand Rapids, 33-36. Way to go Blue Devils! (PICTURE)

In hockey news, PeeWee Bs took fourth place in districts, which were held in Ely last weekend, defeating Ely, Greenway, and International Falls. (GRAPHIC)

Districts for Squirts were held in Hibbing this past weekend. Virginia White ended with in a tie with Greenway White.
Virginia Blue came out of the tournament 2 and 2, with 3 overtime games. That must have been exciting!
Olympics
Alexa
- So I heard that the Winter Olympics started on February 12th and they are going to continue until the 28th.

- As of right now The USA is holding the most medals for the Olympics with 24 medals. That is 7 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze. In second place is Germany with 21 medals. 7 gold, 9 silver, and 5 bronze. And then Norway is in third with 14 medals. 6 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.

- Did you hear that someone died while doing luge.

- Yeah, so they had to move the men’s starting line down to where the women’s starting is and the women’s even farther down the track.

- God rest Nodar Kumaritashvili.

- Did you know the first Olympics was held in Greece over 2,700 years ago?

- That is it for this weeks 2010 Winter Vancouver Olympics.

- Join us next week for another sports update.

- Back to you girls!
Curling
Annie
Curling has been in the news with the Olympics on lately, but did you know that some of our own Roosevelt students curl, too? On Wednesday, they held a pancake dinner. Tickets sold for 5 dollars in advance or 7 dollars at the door. We are told it was a big success!!!

Book Review
Holly
The book The Melting of Maggie Bean. It's a book about a 7th grader that weighs a whole lot, about 200 pounds! She has to go to a camp called Pound Patrollers, and a synchronized swim team called The Waterwings. She is in deep duity. She likes this guy named Peter Applewood, but
along comes Arine Peter Applewood's cousin! The day came for the WaterWings tryouts. She does everything spot on, but she is not one of the three that made the that made the team. the next day in gym the gym teacher told her that her name should have been called instead of the other person. Maggie was speechless. The gym teacher gave her two oppsions. 1.To join the Water Wings and kick the other girl out or 2. She could join the regual swin team and let everyone be happy. What will she do? Well, read the book.

Great job, Holly!
